Josh...one thing about the finishing process I forgot to mention....after I sand off the black (or the darker shade of stain you put down first)  and I then apply the lighter shade, I quickly wipe off the lighter stain I just applied...I do this immediately after foam brushing the stain down.  If it is too dark I lightly sand off the darker spots.  I let this dry per instructions for the stain and then apply the Waterlox top coats.

Wilma....I did not distress-off.  The dark areas are all glaze.

Is the dark areas all glaze or did you distress-off some of the paint to reveal bare wood before glazing?

Wilma...when you glaze you can use either the wipe on (positive) or brush it on and wipe off (negative).  With latex you may want to use an extender (like floetrol)  cause the latex glaze dries really fast otherwise,  and is hard to work with.  On this one I wiped on....let it dry 2 days before you top coat with poly.  I had to work really fast with the latex based glazed.  If it starts to dry and you wipe over it again you will have problems. Also I glazed walls before and I did not top coat after I glazed and it is fine.
