Robert, It actually works out quite well and gives a recorded history of the coming and goings at my property and shop. It is a infra-red wave color camera with sound that sends its output to a monitor and a terabyte harddrives of which I can record to a dvd or cd if needed.  I got 2 sets from Frey's electronic store as  sets that allows adding cameras as needed.  The brand name is "swann bulldog" that is weather proof and hardwired. I have a total of ten cameras that are all secluded from view in my shop as well as my home and outside.  It gives me a 360 degree camera sweep of my exterior with overlaping view of each other.  It makes it impossible to get to my home without being photographed.  To insure failure of the system i have two seperate hardrives and recording system and they are cross wired so that I still get full coverage even if one fails.  I also have a battery back up system.  I  installed these about two years ago without any problems with the system.  in case of forced entry I have a panic alarm installed and if I am away from home i have an automatic phone dialer that calls a list of phones numbers.  Worth the money as you do feel secure once it is in operation.  I encourage everyone to build some type of security in their homes and businesses.

That I understand. Had a customer last year where his outdoor cams were getting stolen, so I came in, installed some dummy cams, and hidden cams both inside and outside the store. Turned out it was the owner of the bar behind his store.

Cameras will deter criminals however here the camera becomes a target and it get vandelized and actually have been stolen.  I live in a rough neighborhood next to "dopers haven" and they need capitol to buy dope with and will steal the camera so my best option is to hide it.

Hate that I cant edit these posts... have to post again...

In a situation where you are doing surveillance on a neighbor or a neighborhood trying to catch crooks, then yeas, a hidden cam is great. they dont know it is there and are less likely to try to gain entrance into the home from another area that isnt covered with a camera.

BTW, Jay, your DVR system isnt from Harbor Freight is it?

Great house Jay.

Megan, I have installed many camera systems, and I have found that the camera in plain sight does better at deterring crime than hidden ones. I would rather always deter the crime than record it, give a copy to the police and then maybe they catch them and get my stuff back, maybe they dont. Just because someone is caught on camera does not mean they will be identified. But when they see a camera they know there is a great chance they will get caught, and they dont even try.

Love the concept and construction of this piece. With some slight alterations to the materials chosen for this project, my squirrels could be very happy living in a house like this! I lived in a "sketchy" neighborhood for just over a year so concealing a surveillance camera like this is a very good idea for my next relocation. This would've been great for me - perhaps I could've caught the perpetrators who broke into my car during spring break two years ago - better safe than sorry next time!
