I built this piece primarily as an outfeed table for my tablesaw. I decided to make it mobile and provide for storage. Coincidentally, Finewoodworking Issue #202 featured an outfeed table on its cover very similar to mine. I borrowed one idea from it by installing the small clamp shelf on one side.

Ted - Thanks for getting back to me. I wonder if there is a rule of thumb (or chart, formula, law of physics or whatever) for how much support is needed to prevent or reduce sag (based on the area, thickness, and type of material)? It looked to me like the top in the Wood magazine article was overkill...that maybe half or a third as many "little boxes" would have sufficed. But I seem to recall seeing a chart somewhere that gave some specifics for some common materials like mdf, hard and soft woods, plywoods, etc....or maybe I'm just having a senior moment, lol. Anyway, thanks for sharing your project, and best wishes to you and yours.

Henry, I checked out the article in Wood magazine. I also quickly checked my top for flatness with a 48" level. It appears to have maybe a 1/16 to 3/32" sag. However, my table has a center partition that could be shimmed to get the "sag" out. The tortion-box top in the article is designed for flatness.

No, I have not seen the article. I'm going to check the flatness of my top and report back. I may take photos.

First of all, I want to say that I love your idea, and I plan to build something very similar as soon as I have the room for it. This month's Wood magazine (Feb '10) has a very similar assembly table featured on page 68. I still like yours a whole lot more! They make their table a lot more difficult to build with their "torsion-box" top, which I guess helps maintain it's "flatness", or maybe MDF needs more support underneath than I could have imagined. Unfortunately, they did not explain "why?". It seems to me that the two MDF halves glued directly together would make a sufficiently flat top. Has anyone seen this article?

Thank you, Bob. I have posted an exploded view of the work table on this site. I am currently working on measured drawings that I expect to post soon. If you can't find the exploded view, let me know.
