Hello Ken,  I use the mortise and tennon method frequent.  I use a tennon cutting jig for a table saw and a power mortiser for cuting the mortise. I use a chisel to fine tune them.  Most are closed mortise as I frequently use a fox tail wedge method and or pegs to lock the tennon in place.

Jay,

Thanks for your reply.

Ken I'm very familiar with these also as I cut several hundred double tennons in pine logs for a log cabin deck railings that went all around the house.  I have also made some of the log furniture before using these.  These are the modern version of the ones used by wheel wrights to cut spokes for wagon and buggy wheels.  The Amish buggy makers still use them today.    I can a test to it that it is tiring work if you do more that a dozen at a time.
