I have an existing deck which was built using 2x10 treated lumber joists on 16" center and 2x6 redwood decking material. The decking material was attached using nails by the builder which have now come loose. I can't use the decking jig tool as the planks are set too close together and I don't want to remove all of the planks to accomodate the required width to allow the tool to function correctly. I'd like to use my Kreg pocket screw tool to come from underneath to reattach the redwood decking.
My question is this - if I place pocket screw slots 2" then 4" then 2" and so on the length of the treated joist, would I weaken the joist and make the deck structurally unsound? The longest joist is 11' and are in excellent condition. the deck is covered and is suspended over a walk out basement so access is no problem.
Thanks,
Mike
