I need to have something  20"  x  63"  to protect the top of a computer desk.

Tempered glass is way to expensive. Plexiglass scratches to easy. I would like to use a heavy plastic  ( like what they make cutting boards out of ).

I would like to have it black in color.

Any ideas of what I might be able to use.

     Thanks for your time.

pictures of the desk will be posted soon.

If you want cheap but holds up  masonite. Many people put that on top of work benches. Never tried painting.

Well john there is sand blast but remeber this it anit the ply that your grand father use to use this doesnt come off even with a blet sander.

You may want to look into a bar top epoxy. It would be permanent for all intents and purposes:

I've only seen it in clear but it may come in colors.

Another alternative would be to use HPL (Formica)

MDF can be painted, masonite too...just use spray paint & with slow & even strokes it should look like the hood of a freshly painted car.

A table top protector can be achieved by installing

''black'' porcelain tiles---butted together.

Use the applicable adhesive to secure the tiles in place.

Place the full tiles along the front.

Remove any ''tabs'' along the edges of each tile,

so as to achieve a ''butted'' joint (no gap).

(Gaps can be filled with an clear epoxy).

Add an edge banding,  made from solid wood stock, such as oak or maple.

Why not go get some of the new fake thin hadwood flooring and glue them together.

Formica kind of spendy but your counter tops are nice are they not sometimes looking at building surplus store you can find it cheap

You could use what I make showers out of -- Corian or Swanstone -- nearly indestructible stuff.  They build solid surface countertops out of the stuff, but those 2 companies have 1/4" thick panels in many colors including black.  Besides the dust, carbide woodworking tools work great on the stuff.

well you could take a 1/4 or 1/2 inch peice of plywood and get it covered in some fake leather or some type of other materail you like and use that as a table protector,, that would be the cheaps way that i could think of
