Tom,

If you're going with two layers of 1/2" MDF,

I'd add 2x4 stock to the underside, running side-to side,

so as to make a rigid work surface.

Space the 2x4's far enough away from the router, located on the underside of the table top,

Thank Ken for this! I only have 1/2" stock MDF and I can make it two layers thick. The other plans look great you have given me. I am sure it will work out great. I have never used my Router yet looking forward to doing it. It came with 1/2 carbide bits. I have to buy a few more to do the things I would like to get done. But for now, I have to settle with what I have. I have the old budget, buying things. As I said I am new and just getting started. I have a Stanly cutting table, a…

I have never used my Router yet looking forward to doing it. It came with 1/2 carbide bits. I have to buy a few more to do the things I would like to get done. But for now, I have to settle with what I have. I have the old budget, buying things. As I said I am new and just getting started. I have a Stanly cutting table, a miter saw, Router, Circular Saw, I made the work table from the video the Kreg people put out but a little larger top then they had. I bought the K5 system Which I love the toold to make shelving, cabinet doors, Rip Cut, Door hing set, and clamps, and more. Don't want to bore you with the list. I am sure many people have a lot more carpentry equipment then I have. My wife want me to build book cases for her and storage shelves. I have to get busy doing this. Thanks again Ken for your help.

You can make a simple router table, made from MDF---

24" x 36"x3/4" stock, 2 layers thick.

(two layers thick so as to provide a stable platform).

Add a hole in the top panel for router bit clearance, and mounting holes, to secure the router base.

Routed out an area, the size of the router base, and to be a depth equal to the thickness of the router base,

so that the base will be flush with the worktop surface.

Secure the router base to the underside of the upper layer.

Make a clearance hole in the lower panel, to clear the router base.

(affix the router base to the underside of the upper layer).

A simple fence could be constructed from 3/4"x 4" x 36" MDF.

Fasten two such pieces at a 90 degree angle.

The fence can be secured, during routing operations, using "C" or "F" style clamps, or the like, to the table top.

Many years ago, I made by first router table, like this, and it worked out great, for several years,

before I bought a router table.

Happy building.
