I was taking inventory of my router bits with the intent to start a collection of good quality bits to use in my table and hand held routers. Two or three years back I bought a couple of cheap sets from Sears and another from Canadian Tire. In checking them out yesterday, I took a close look at the 1/2" roundover and the 1/2" beading bit in the Mastercraft set and I can not see any difference. I know the difference between a rounded over edge and a beaded edge I have used these bits for both profiles by adjusting the router to achieve the desired profile. So the QUESTION is, IS there really a diference in the bits and if so, what is the difference.

Hi Kenny - Look closely at the bit, just below the bearing. If the cutting edge comes up the roundover and then continues in toward the bearing, you have a roundover/ beading bit. It may be switched between the two functions by swapping bearing OD's. A bearing whose OD brings it flush to the end of the roundover part of the cutter makes it a roundover bit, a smaller bearing allows it to leave a small bead. A strictly roundover bit will not have a small cutting edge after the end of the roundover cut..... Make sense, hope so, I just confused myself.

Thanks John, i suspected that changing the bearing size allowed the bit to perform one function or the other.

hi kenny, i think a pic is worth a 1000 words. look at my bow case. the edge detail was done with a beading bit, two passes to get the look. hope this helps. i will try to get a pic of both bits side by side and post it in the next few days.
