Kreg Owners' Community

While at the Woodsmith Store this morning, I found the Kreg PRS3030 Precision Router Table Insert Plate.  This was convenient as while Iam off this week, one of the projects I hope to work on is installing a right-hand table extension with an integrated router support feature.  Next to the plate was another new product, the Kreg PRS3040 Precision Router Table Insert Plate Levelers.  Can life get any better?

I glanced at the back of the router plate packaging, then at the levelers, and I had the sinking feeling that something was missing: a template to run a top-bearing straight router bit around for creating the hole for the plate. I emptied my green Woodsmith basket and decided I would go home and write Kreg and see what's up.

Within a couple hours, I had my answer from Kreg's Customer Service: "Sorry, we do not make that product," as in no ready-made template for routing out the hole in the table for the router plate to drop inside.  I then opened up the corresponding PDF diections for installing the plate, and sure enough, one is asked drill four holes and connect the dots from there.  Just what I did not want to hear.

I am on my sixth or seventh router table, each getting a bit more sophisticated than the last.  The classic end-all problm with building router tables is not fastening the router to the plate or adjustable support, but getting a smooth, seamless(ish) fit between the plate and the table.  Woodhaven in Eastern Iowa sells a template that almost provides the user a CNC (Computer Numeric Controlled) fit, or they will take in your table top and machine a plate hole for you to match their plate dimensions.

I would strongly suggest that short of having everyone and their dog petition Kreg to be able to send their router table tops to beautiful Huxley, Iowa, that Kreg consider simply adding a rectangular router template in their plate kit.  Moreover, include a set of the leveling corners while they are at it.  Note that no where did I ask for this to be "free".  The plate is like $70, the supports are around $20, so for $10 more, do it right and include a template.

In closing, a fine router table is a thing of beauty,  It is certainly one of the first things I notice when I visit another person's shop.  I'd rather have a professional looking and functioning plate and table arrangement. Nice plate, nifty levelers, but in my estimation 33% of the "System" is missing..

Regards,

Joe
