Kreg Owners' Community

I really liked the posting of the Miter Saw Dust Hood and the detailed instructions. I sat down and took all the dimensions and "built" the Hood on the Google (now Trimble) Sketchup. It's complete with dimensions on cut sheet and Kreg Pocket Holes in place and an assembled unit as well. If anyone would find it useful, I'd be happy to upload it to anyone. I have pictures as well if you would like to take a look at it. The best thing about using Sketchup is the ease at making changes if you wanted it larger to accommodate a 12" Miter Saw or change just a few of the characteristics. I might be giving this a shot myself, but a heavily modified version since my saw 12" and is mounted on a metal frame stand, If I do, I'll post the results here. I have the Kreg Jig K5 Pocket-Hole System and love it, I have used it extensively and maybe I should send in some pictures of my projects sometime.

Nice job Tom!

I kind of wish the plans for the Miter Saw Dust Hood gave some hint on where to find the vacuum ports they used. I finally found them at Rockler (#28666). Maybe they don't want to promote specific non-Kreg products though. I can understand that.

I couldn't help but notice that the Kreg plan calls for the pocket holes to be on the outside of the hood, but you put the pocket holes on the inside of the hood. Any particular reason for doing it that way on your build??

Also, for the non-90 degree joint at the rear bottom, did you by chance caulk that joint to make it more air tight? Or does it end of pretty air tight without sealing?

Hi again Ken

Sorry, apparently I didn't see your complete reply.  I didn't pay attention to the location of the pocket holes on the outside, it make more sense to have them on the outside, so I fixed it.  Many of us don't have a nice dust control system and have to rely on a shop vac, so I modified it for a shop vac hookup.  No way as efficient, but it helps.  The original picture I posted was pretty much from the authors design except for the location of the pocket holes, I modified the design to reflect the changes.  With a 2 1/2" vac hole pressed into the openings now, it's sealed pretty well.
