I purchased a micro jig (mj) because I am making a face frame using 1/2". I measured the stock and it is .44 thick.I am a extreme newbie when it comes to wood working. However I really enjoy it.

My problem is this.

The screw does not come out centered. Using a 1" screw, it come out the top of the 2nd piece. When using a .75 screw, not enough threads come through to join the 2 pieces. I have tried adjusting both depth of drill and height of jig. I worked about 4 hours then gave up and put the project aside, I am hoping some of you have suggestions.

I will try to include pictures of my problem.

This shows the holes wher the screw comes out.

This illustrates the .75 screw not having enough threads

And last this is where the screws go into the board I am attempting to join.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Dear Chuck,

Just to make sure everything is set up properly I want to go over this with you.  Adjust the drill guide block to the 1/2" mark.  Then you will need to set your depth collar to the 5/8" mark for this material.  However, I think the main issue that you are running into is the fact that your material is not square.  You will want to use the 3/4" screws but since part of the wood is gone with the rounded corners you are losing wood for your screw to go into to provide you with strength.  If you trimmed these so that the piece is square I think that the 3/4" screw would supply enough holding power for your joint.  If you have any other quesitons please let us know.

The problem is not with holding power, it is the fact that the screw goes through the top of the of piece.

As you can see the screw does not come out of the piece in the center.

Chuck,

Are your settings correct?  If the depth collar is not set properly it will affect where the screw comes out in your material.
