Kreg Owners' Community

 Hi all,

I am going to build a chicken coop this spring, Does anyone have any plans or tips, I was thinking about one on wheels to move it around the yard. I have small hills and wet land. I   have the k3 and I am thinking about getting the k4. I am new to wood working  on small projects. I have built sheds and a garage. I used plans and changed things as I built them.

Roy,

I have the K3---

bought the K4---got rid of it---

I like the K3 better than the K4,

because of the front locking handle design.

Re chicken coops---

I haven't built one in a lot of years.

It's a pretty simple build though, when having construction savoy.

A mobile coop is feasible---perhaps small trailer size 8" wheels and axle fitted onto a frame.

You might find an old trailer cheap and build the coop onto that.

It may a require a tractor to move it around.

Make it with an outdoor run.

It'll need to be predator-proof.

Coop build

You may want to consider having slide-out tray(s), of a size that is manageable to handle, so as to collect the droppings.

The bottom of the unit to feature hardware cloth, so as to allow the dropping to fall onto removable trays, so as to facilitate removal of the droppings---this would avoid climbing inside the unit to clean it out,

and to hose-it-down during cleaning.

Chicken wire screening for the sides---

affixed to the framing with 1x2 strips, so as to facilitate easy replacement of the screens, if needed.

An enclosed area for night-time resting, nesting boxes and shelter.

Access door(s), on the back side to get into the resting area, for cleaning, etc.

Sloped roof---of metal or waveform fiberglass sheeting.

Roof slope and design to support the winter snow load.

Shop on google, I'm sure you'll find ideas for various builds.

Have fun planning and with your build.

look on Mother Earth news web sight for ideas and plans

Check out this link. This is one of the many websites I browse looking for inspiration. Good luck.

Look on Pintrest  for idea's. There are lots and quite a few even have free plans. I have customers come to me all the time with pictures from there and if your skills are good enough you won't have any problems building one with just having pictures. There are some really great ones on there !!!!

Before you build a coop for any fowl, check with your local county, village or city ordinance for keeping and housing. You might be surprised at what you find.

Second be sure to allow a minimum of 6 sq. ft. per bird and a net or screen above as well to protect against hawks and owls. Crafty critters they are.

Enjoy the fresh eggs. I am a Rhode Island Red fan.

Try going to instructables.com  They have a homestead portal that might be useful.  Good luck!!

Thank you all for your replies.
