I'm in the process of making a bookcase that will hide a closet access door.

I will be using Kreg tools:
Multi mark
Rip cut
Pocket hole jig
Kreg clamps

I made a video of the process so far. Check it out on YouTube

THOM , looking good so far and will be waiting to see the finished book case !!! You did a great job on both of your videos , thanks for sharing , JIM !!!!

I also will be waiting for more video.  I have just the door that I have been planning on doing this too.  I had thought of having book case flush with wall giving it a built-in look, but we'll see.

Thanks for all your comments, David this is all my design, just drew it on paper. I'm still trying to work out how to open the door with out an obvious door knob.

why not put one of thsos gold hooks next to the edge hang pot haoder on it or somthing.

Thom, Try a magnetic latch. Look on DIY Network's site online. Look for "Man Caves" the show. They did a false door with a magnet latch of some kind.  The bookcase is coming right along. I hope this might help you out, Thom. Thanks for sharing your plan and video of your project.

Leslee thanks for the information I will take a look at there solution.

Hi Thom, looking good. I watched the video and it covered several good points on cutting.   I have a similiar type cutting bench made of 2x6 x 10 ft material that is ridgid on the sides and ends.  I made a seperate grid using 2x6 by 8ft material that floats on steel pipe of which runs at 90 degrees to the sides.  I have bored the holes oversized allowing me to move the grid member to different areas of the platform.  I throw it up a couple saw horses and rip my sheet goods without any difficulty as the adjustments allow me to adjust the grid members to fit the cuts and maintain support on both sides of the cut.  I only rip my sheet good down and do the cross cutting on the slide table on my table saw.

You hidden door with a book case works well as I have done a few of these before using a steel door of which I secured the door in the framing by mounting the hinge side against the 2 X framing.  To make it work easier I changed out the hinges to the 4 inch ball bearing heavy duty style and used long screws to mount the hinge through the door casing and directlyu into the framing.  I did this because of the heavy weight the book case and books and items that are placed on the book case shelves.  When you open a loaded bookcase outward the leverage of the weight bears considerable on the hinge point.  This will cause the door to want to sag down and soon will be dragging on the flooring.

To keep the door closed I have used a heavy duty adjustable ball catch that only requires a pull to open and a push to close.

The only other issue that I had was to conceal the hinge barrels from view and I did this by creating some molding that attached to the book case side and extended outward over the hinge.  You will have to attach the molding proud of the hinge barrels so it will pass over the hinge without binding.  If you make both sides look similiar it is not too noticeable.

For more security I have drilled through the bottom shelf and into the floor and installed a simple 1/2 dia inch  steel rod with a small 1/4" dia rod welded to the top in a "T" fashion.  This being small it is easy to hide by either books or artical that a thief would not be to interested in moving thus seeing the small rod.  Do this as close to the corner of the book case as possible and on the lock side.

I have used this method to hide large safes and gun safes and even have hidded a full room armory in a basement of which holds several thousand dollars worth of art and weapons.   In the basement job as an extra security, a alarm sounds when the door is opened.  I used one of the electonic locks that had a remote sensor to activate the lock that is hidded in the wall.  It was a special lock but operate just like the ones you can buy for the high end security locks for exterior doors.

Like your plan and anxious to see it completed.

Thank you Jay, I will try to use some of your suggestions, I really like the ball catch idea, I heavily reinforced the hinge side of the frame to handle the additional weight. The door is an exterior door with heavy hinges, I'm thinking they will support the weight. If the hinges fail then I will upgrade to better hinges. Episode 3 is being recorded now and will be out soon.

Thom, I though you would like to see this hidden door. Pretty tricky idea.

Thanks Jay for sharing, I really liked the video very well done. The electronic door lock was really Kool.
