I'm very interested in making a floating type island or planter, does anyone have any thoughts on this....for the koi pond, okay if the roots hang in the water. Any ideas are welcome.

Hmm, that poses a couple of interesting questions. The most obvious is what type of wood wiil withstand continuous submersion. The one that comes to mind would by Cypress but I'm not that well versed in types of wood or their attributes.

The other question that comes to mind is the size/weight ratio. In order for something to float, it needs to displace an amount of liquid equal  to or greater than it's weight. As I recall, a gallon of water weighs about 8 lbs and is about .6 cubic ft.

Another question is the medium you are thinking of using to anchor the plants.. I would think dirt would not be a good medium as it would muddy the pond. Possibly no medium at all, thinking hydroponics here.

You might want to elevate the tub from bottom of pond with a cement block and then add couple more blocks on inside of tub so it stays putt, Put your plants in  and it would look like it floats. I dont no what you are really lookig for. Water plants dont really need any medium  they survive on wate alone .My neighbor has aquatic plants and they just float si have no idea what your looking for
I'll be using teak or cedar, and an old ice chest I cut up. my 2 foot koi keep ripping my plants apart, so I'm trying to macguyver a planter so they don't totally destroy all vegetation in the koi pond.
this one in the pic....18 around....200 bucks!

200 bucks - Yikes!!

Teak should work great. Been thinking about Jens post. If the plants just need water for a medium, you really don't need a bottom, just some fencing fabric, maybe 1/2" square. Only real physical bottom you would need would be some bracing to hold the shape. Maybe some weights to keep it down in the water. Not thinking planter here, more of a sea going corral. Dunno, just some random thoughts from a wandering mind.

hmmm...looks like you could fill it with ice and beer, invite everyone from the site over to further discuss the situation !

But seriously...maybe use composite wood...like used in deck construction.

fishing poles?

PS Has to be untippable, the koi shred, rip, tear, annihilate everything in their path, notice the :Bites out of the lily pads ") still working on ideas. I'm thinking hydroponics, this is a 3,000 gallon pond, 3 to 4 feet deep, I have a ton of water plants, I'm looking to plant lettuce, the koi love it, and hoping to divert them away from the water plants ")
Thanks Mike, /i got a few deck pieces to try out a few ideas. that's a very good idea, See that's why 2 heads are better than 1!
