Anyone have an idea for building a fireplace surround. My fireplace is set high off the ground with a 12inch brick hearth. I want to build a paint grade surround and add mantle on top. I will cover all the brick I can as it goes to the ceiling. Any ideas or links to plans would be great.

You didn't mention if you wanted free or paid plans so here are some links to both:

Wood Magazine Pay

Replacing a fireplace mantel free

Once thing you need to seriously consider are the laws in you local community. Some places won't allow wood mantels on fireplaces and other restrict their placement (so many inches from fire, type of wood, etc.) If a fire starts in your house, the insurance may not cover it if they determine the local ordinances aren't adhered to.

Good luck.
