When I set my drill for the proper width of wood etc I notice the tip if the step drill barely if at all pierces the bottom of the wood. I've seen on TV where a very distinct hole is made when others do it. Am I just not setting it properly (it is set to the guide) or do I have to add a little bit extra depth?.....Mike

That is fine. If you go too far, your screw will come out the board you are screwing into.

Mike,

With everything set up correctly for your thickness of wood the pilot tip will not come through your piece. With this little bit of wood left, it will allow the threads of your screw to have something to hold onto in the piece you are drilling into giving you a stronger joint. Also if the tip goes all of the way through it will cause your wood to bubble out not allowing you to get the tightest possible joint. If you have any other questions please let us know.
