I was so excited to get my Kreg jig. I've been using it and practicing and practicing and I have just been defeated. Actually the jig is not the problem the problem is putting everything together after the pocket holes are made.

Hey Cheryl,

I know the feeling, but if you are having the same problem I was having..joints not staying put or even.  I have to really work with my clamps and get some new ones.  Clamping is key...and so is some glue.  I am sure your stuff isn't as bad as you think.  Keep at it, you won't turn into Norm Abrams over night.

Cheryl;

In the video section of this page there are several helpful videos for new Kreg users, page 3 there are two from Chiefs shop. As well on the side trim carpentry  with Gary Stiegler there is a lot of helpful information on clamping etc.

Hope this info was helpful, keep trying you will get it and be amazed. Let us all know how it is going and if we can be of anymore help.

Cheryl,

All joinery has a learning curve, just make some adjustments and keep trying.  Also the web and tv provide us with a parade of perfect looking projects.  There are many imperfect projects that are just fine or even great.  I would try a forgiving project, possibly an outdoor project or a utility project.  I build Norm's adirondack chair with high school students its really forgiving and pocket holes really improve the design.  Finally try pocket holes with a notch, dado or rabbet.  This traps the board and prevents movement.

Hi Cheryl,    I would think it is a safe bet to say that every one of us has attempted a project and felt it was best suited for firewood when things do not go as hoped or planned.   What seems to be the problem?  Joints not holding?   Assembly out of square?    Great group here of both experienced craftsman as well as those just starting out like myself.  Hope you keep giving it a try.  Nothing better than the high five moments you give yourself!

get some scrap wood and practice. the key is clamping. set up a 2x4 with a clamp on your bench and run your work being screwed into right up against it, then clamp your work together with a KREG clamp. It took me a little fussing too at first, but you will figure it out.
