The Kreg Jig K5 is designed for use with materials from 1/2" to 1 1/2" thick. For thicker materials, we recommend the Kreg Jig HD. It's optimized for working with 2x4s and 1 1/2" thick and larger stock.

You can use it on 4x4 stock just not in the clamping fixture. The K-5 should have come with a guide for using it outside of the fixture. Use the 1-½ setting and drill on at least 2 sides.
